On Novegno there are several Great War infrastructures: roads, tunnels, trenches, caves, emplacements, remains of the huge fortification infrastructures built during the war. The symbol of these traces is Forte Rivon or Rione, a small defence infrastructure with a key role in the battle of summer 1916: it was never taken by the soldiers of the Emperor Franz Josef who stopped a hundred metres away as the crow flies, on the large tower of the Vaccarezze and on the top of the Calliano. In the decisive hours of the Strafexpedition, the offence also broke on the Novegno; the Austro-Hungarians made an extreme effort to get over the Novegno, which they called "letzer Berg", the last mountain: no obstacle separated them from descending on Schio and the Vicenza plain, but in the end they could not do so.
The recommended itinerary towards Monte Novegno starts from Schio, with a visit to the Military War Memorial of the SS. Trinità. This place, typical "city" military war memorial, is on the edge of the plain, just before the slope starts climbing towards the hills. From here on towards the Tretto plateau, to reach Santacatterina and then on to Contrada Rossi, from where you take the Monte Novegno road for heavy vehicles till the large car park at the top. From there in just a few minutes on foot you reach Busa del Novegno.
Five walking routes start from Busa del Novegno (1,500 m) towards Forte Rivon (1690 m): to Monte Calliano; to to Cima Alta; to the Priaforà; to Monte Cimetta; to Campedello and Monte Ciove. From up there, besides the fortified complex, you have a fantastic, unique view. For more information on these routes, see the detailed sheet.
