Nervesa della Battaglia is full of signs connected to the decisive Battle of the Solstice; so is the ideal starting and finishing point of a route around the Montello dedicated to those events.
You start from Villa Eros, seat of the Great War Museum. The city centre is an example of post-war architectural reconstruction. Of special interest, the Town Hall, rebuilt several times. Continue along via X Armata skirting the Montello on the east slope where we meet, on the bed of the Piave, the Jonathan Collection Foundation which is rebuilding flying examples of Great War biplanes. North of the Montello, you have the remains of first and second line trenches reaching the Crocetta through conserved stretches. Interesting bunkers on the "cliff" over the Piave front line.
Crocetta del Montello still has the King's Observation Post standing a few metres from the Roman Column, a strategic emplacement with a dominating view of the front line. Underground emplacements and trenches can still be seen near the river. But Casa Pontello deserves special attention. It was built after the war by its owner, to give War orphans an education. Signs of the defence system set up by the English can be seen in Ciano: machine gun bunkers, connections and shelters.
Volpago del Montello still has memorial signs such as the Arch to the Dead at Venegazzù or the Monument to the Dead and Viale della Rimembranza in the centre. But it is the north slope of the Montello that has the trenches, emplacements and stones recalling important War moments. Landmarks are Casa De Faveri Tron and the inn at the stone of the Arditi (daring). In particular, the Roman Column, a commemorative monument.
The Sacellum dedicated to Major Francesco Baracca stands at the border with Giavera. Giavera del Montello still has traces of enemy army's main penetration: a stone dedicated to the Florence Lancers recalls the extreme battle against the Austro-Hungarians, and a number of farm houses (Serena, Biadene, etc.) act as Piave Landmarks, useful for recalling some important battle stages. The "Valle dei Morti" (valley of the dead) is another theatre of tragic events worth a visit. The peaceful British cemetery recalls the sacrifice of 416 subjects of the English Crown. The names of roads and monuments recall protagonists like General Pennella.
A 22 km railway line connects Montebelluna to Nervesa della Battaglia. Now abandoned, it was built as of 1914 in view of the country's war needs. It is what remains of the famous military railway leading to the Piave. In Nervesa, the famous cross now kept in the War Memorial was located at the station.
