Forte Tre Sassi - Cima Sief - Col di Lana
The crossing, starting from Forte Tre Sassi, allows you to reach, one after the other, the peaks of Monte Sief and Col di Lana. Both these peaks were the scene of important war events during World War I on the Dolomite front. The excursion offers a full turn of horizon over magnificent views. After the nearby walls of Lagazuoi and Sass de Stria, you then see, in order, the Group of the Fanis, the Pralongià plateau, the high Val Cordevole, the Conturines, the Sass de Putia, the Gardenazza, the Sella, the Marmolada, the Civetta, Monte Pore and the Gruppo Croda da Lago-Cernera. From Forte Tre Sassi (2168 m), transformed into a Great War Museum, follow path no. 23 which goes by Lake Valparola and then down by the Laste (2013 m) between the Sass de Stria and the Montagna di Castello. At this point, you can see an interesting Austro-Hungarian Edelweiss entrenchment. You then climb up again along the Gerda fields to reach 2262 m, on the ridge of the Sella del Sief, just under the characteristic rocky promontory called Piccolo Settsass or Sasso Richthofen, in homage to the first speleologist who, from studies of the area, had the intuition over the singular Dolomite formation process. The small Gerda lake is visible under the path with Austro-Hungarian Wasserwache emplacements. Path no. 21 leaves from Sella del Sief to go down the ridge of Passo Sief (2209 m) and then up to Cima Sief ( 2424 m). From there you still descend along path no. 21 which, with some via ferrata passages, continues along the rocky crest under the ridge, towards the Dente del Sief. There are a lot of war infrastructure remains in the area. You then descend towards the shoulder at 2383 m (a deep incision opened by the Austrian mine of 21 October 1917), and up again to the top of Col di Lana, whose peak was blown up by the Italians on the night of 17/18 April 1916, transforming the peak completely.
