Monte Cengio
The Monte Cengio monumental area preserves one of the most suggestive, evocative routes of war operations in the mountains: "la granatiera" (the grenadier path), a path dug completely into the rocky walls of the Cengio, overhanging the Val d'Astico below. It is flanked by a system of tunnels, emplacements, cave batteries, mule paths, in a highly suggestive landscape. At the start of the ring route to the sacred Cengio area, you have the Chiesa Votiva Granatieri di Sardegna (votive Church Grenadiers of Sardinia) named after the brigade defending Monte Cengio in June 1917 which sacrificed itself when the Austro-Hungarian army attacked in force during the Strafexpedition. On the summit, a cross and an altar dedicated to the dead is the holy place dedicated to prayer and commemoration ceremonies.
