Erected between 1932 and 1936 on the hill of Leiten, the War Memorial of the same name, by the architect O. Rossato, was inaugurated in the presence of King Vittorio Emanuele III on 17 July 1938. The remains of 19,999 Austro-Hungarians and 34,286 Italian dead, of which 12 decorated with the Gold Medal to Military Value, have been collected together in the impressive square based crypt. Two large halls in the Leiten War Memorial have been set up as a Great War Museum. The exhibition includes many exhibits and rich photographic documentation accompanying the story of the mountain sector war, from the Adige to the Brenta, during the War's first two years. Another section documents what happened in the 1917-1918 two-year period, with special reference to fighting on the Pasubio, with the great works to organise logistics and reinforce the difficult mountain positions, and to the Battle of Ortigara.
