On Monte Cengio, between tunnels and trenches
The Great War has left its scars everywhere on the Sette Comuni uplands. The route leading to Monte Cengio has a high historical value and is able to combine the pleasures of mountain hiking with the opportunity of learning more about the First World War. The trail is easy, suitable for all, well signposted and scheduled as a Great War Eco museum track. Among tunnels (you may want to bring a flashlight), trenches and observation posts, the route stretches for about 6 kilometres, running along the southern slope of Monte Cengio and offering stunning views of the Valle dell'Astico.
After reaching the "Command Gallery", another impressive military work, you come out onto the so-called Piazzale Pennella (the general who headed the military operations from here), the final leg of the route. From here the view extends across the central basin of the Altopiano di Asiago. A great place to visit is the church dedicated to the Grenadiers of Sardinia, built near the famous Salto, where the eponymous brigade resisted surrendering the Monte to the Austrians during 1917. The route is accessible all year round, taking special care during the winter months. Useful info on the route For information:
