The terrible story of Bianca di Collalto

The Caminesi of Ceneda and the Counts of Collalto of Treviso, both of Lombard origin were among the most powerful families of the rulers of the mainland of the Venetian Republic. These two families were divided by a rabid hatred. Eventually, however, the day came when they realized that peace and agreement were more valuable in the fight for their existence and decided to reconcile and to forge bonds of kinship. Tolberto di Collalto asked for Chiara da Camino's hand in marriage. The woman's jealousy woman clouded the happiness of the couple's marriage, and Tolberto accepted to go to war without regret. A girl named Bianca, one of the servants who had been brought up with the children of the old Count was like a sister to Tolberto and was thus placed in charge of the female servants who were to look after Countess Chiara.

Upon leaving for the war, the count went into the bedroom of his wife and Bianca combed Chiara's hair while Tolberto said good-bye to his wife. Chiara was in front of the mirror and in its reflection she saw how her husband said good-bye to the servant and how Bianca had wiped away a tear. Chiara remained silent, but as the Count was away she became sick from her jealousy. She locked up the servant in the underground prisons of the castle and gave orders to burry the servant in a wall of bricks in the tower.

When Tolberto returned from the war and learned about the terrible event, he couldn't live alongside Chiara any longer and drove her away from the castle. It is said that since then Bianca's ghost has appeared several times to the Collalto family. If she appeared in white, she bore good news but her face was hidden with a black veil if she announced misfortune.
