Journeys of Faith

There are about a hundred churches and oratories nestled amongst the Veronese foothills. In Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella there is the beautiful Romanesque Church of San Giorgio di Valpolicella with the Longobard Ciborium, a tabernacle reconstructed between 1923 and 1924  and the great baptistery. The striking Church of San Floriano, located in San Pietro in Cariano, is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Romantic style found in Verona.  In Fumane, you can visit the shrine of Madonna de La Salette which dominates the town from above on the “Incisa” hill.

The Church of San Pietro ad Arbizzano in the village of Negrar has a long history and was first mentioned in a document dating back to 1056, elements of its gothic origin can still be admired today.  Finally, in Negrar, the Romanesque bell tower is the only part of the Ancient Church of San Martino which still stands and it can be visited all year round. In San Giovanni Ilarione, visit the small church of San Zeno where  you can observe the entire Val d'Alpone from the hill on which it stands. In Montecchia di Crosara there is the Church of San Salvatore,  a typical building of pure romantic style, even if over time it has undergone some modifications.

One of the most important sites in the foothills of Vicenza is the Church of Chiampo with a replica of the grotto of Lourdes, a visit to which is equivalent to the original. The grotto is found at the end of a picturesque trail of the stations of the cross. The Santuario della Madonna dell'Olmo is also linked to a miracle, it is dedicated to the moment that the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherds. Saint Anthony is particularly worshipped in Zugliano: the parish Church overlooking the town preserves a relic of Saint Anthony in an enclosed alter, donated to the Parish in 1656.

The body of Saint Bakhita, also known as Sor Moretta ("little brown sister") is preserved in Schio. Among the oratories in the countryside, the small Church of  San Biagio in Grumolo Pedemonte certainly warrants a visit as it dates back to the year 1000 AC.  There is also the Church of Madonna dell’onda in San Nazario, linked to the affection and devotion of the population of San Nazario and Valstagna, and the Madonna dell'Acqua in Mussolente which was named after a wooden statue which escaped the fury of the waters in 1600. Finally, the oratory of San Matio di Crespadoro is very special, it is the one of the finest examples of popular local art.

In the Treviso foothills, there is the beautiful Follina Abbey which dates back to the 12th Century and was restored after the end of the First World War. In San Pietro di Feletto there is the Romanesque Church and in Cison di Valmarino you can visit the small churches of San Martino, San Vito and San Francesco.

The medieval Cathedral in Asolo, a historic Episcopal which was remodelled in the 1700s using a design by Giorgio Massari, contains important works by Lorenzo Lotto, Jacopo Bassano (also known as Jacopo dal Ponte) and Sebastiano Bastiani.

And finally, the Church of San Vigilio delle Vigne in Farra di Soligo is extremely beautiful and is surrounded by splendid vineyards overlooking the town of Col San Martino.
