Cologna Veneta

Lying low in the province of Verona, Cologne Veneta is an interesting archaeological center. In fact, an interesting collection of exhibits and testimonies of the past of this territory are exhibited in the Archaeological Civic Museum of this town. The museum is found in the Building of the Monte di Pieta.

Cologna Veneta was the first to see the presence of the Romans, then it became a strong hold for the bishop of Vicenza, and towards the first half of the 1100 it became part of the territory of Verona. Then it was the domain of Ezzelino da Romano, of the Scaliger family, who ordered the construction of the walls and completed the castle, the Carraresi and Visconti until 1405 when the population was spontaneously given to Venice.

Only the square tower of the old Fortress, the symbol of the city, remain together with an underground maze that houses the Lapidary Museum that holds the remains from various eras (aqueduct, bricks, millstones, a Roman memorial stone Roman and Gothic pieces of the ancient Duomo).
The neoclassical Duomo is found where the castle now stands and keeps precious pieces of art. The Church of the Holy Spirit and the church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul are of particular value. The church of the Holy Spirit is adorned by a beautiful baroque altar.
Today, Cologna Veneta is an important agricultural area and is known as the capital of the nougat. For those looking for events that exhibit traditions and food of the area, the traditional Feast of the Nougat is held in this town in December.
