Castelfranco Veneto
The founding of Castelfranco Veneto, as we know it today, dates back to the end of the 12th century. The City of Treviso, which governed that part of the territory, decided to found a fortified village that would be used to control the raids of the rival cities Padua and Vicenza and, after having built mighty walls surrounding the town bounded by a moat, a hundred families were sent there to populate it.
This is how Castelfranco was born; like a village at the western end of the Treviso area inhabited by peasants and farmers called to affirm the existence of a municipality - Treviso - which, for that time, was located quite far away however guaranteeing the opportunity to live in a village that is "franco" (free) free of taxes and duties (hence the name Castelfranco).
The original city walls were further fortified during the rule of
Ezzelino da Romano, of Cangrande della Scala (Scaligera) and during the Carraresi Families, to finally reach its maximum extent with the Venetian Government.
Today the defensive system, still perfectly preserved, offers visitors a charming Castle framing an articulated 16th century historic centre. Outside the walls, the countryside is propped up with ancient villas and charming modern age historic homes.
