Dog Sledding in the Dolomites
One of the most original and ancient ways to enjoy the mountains is certainly venturing out on a sled drawn by a pack of dogs, i.e. dog sledding.
This is a sport for all those who love the mountain in its most pristine aspect in the silence of the snowy woods and in the company of these friendly animals.
For those wishing to engage in official competitions, there are ten competition categories determined according to the length of the trail (sprint, mid and long distance trails) and by the breed and number of dogs on the team, usually from two to eight.
Comelico is the ideal place to enjoy amateur dog sledding the as well as competitions, and where you can find trails suited to dog sledding on snow or on the ground (off-season). Today there is a series of dogsleds on wheels of various types, such as the bicycle (bikedog).
The dog sledding sled has become much lighter and more flexible, with improved performance and resistance. This makes it less tiring for the dogs who are pulling it. Technical equipment and dog teams can be hired at Sled dog schools at all the mountain districts in the Veneto, as well as an expert musher (driver) who can accompany you on the trail if you are a beginner.
